How to Oil & Condition Your Board

See how to properly oil and condition your cutting board to keep the wood protected and looking its best.

CLEANING YOUR BOARD

Wash with warm, soapy water after use and towel dry immediately. Never soak your board or put it in the dishwasher. Excess moisture and heat can cause solid wood to warp or crack.

Oiling Your Board

Apply Rugged Woodworking Board Oil whenever the wood begins to look or feel dry. For boards used daily, this may be about once a week. Apply oil to the surface, sides, and edges, allow it to soak in, then wipe away any excess.

Deep Conditioning

Apply Rugged Woodworking wood conditioner about once a month for lasting protection. Spread a thin layer over the surface, sides, and edges and allow it to soak in for several hours or overnight before buffing away any excess.

Board Oil vs. Wood Conditioner

Both our Board Oil and Wood Conditioner are made with USDA Certified Organic fractionated coconut oil, USDA Certified Organic carnauba wax, and local beeswax. The difference is in the consistency and how they're used.

Board Oil: A lighter formula in a convenient spray bottle for regular maintenance. It absorbs into the wood to help prevent drying.

Wood Conditioner: A thicker blend with more wax for added surface protection. Apply about once a month to help keep your board conditioned and looking its best.

Common Questions

Does my board come ready to use?

Yes. Every Rugged Woodworking cutting board arrives oiled and conditioned and is ready to use.

Why does my board feel rough?

Moisture can occasionally raise the wood grain. This is normal with natural wood. Simply sand the rough area lightly with fine-grit sandpaper, then apply Rugged Woodworking Board Oil.

Why is color coming off my board?

A small amount of natural wood color may transfer to your cloth during the first few cleanings or while applying oil. This is normal and will decrease over time.

Why does my board look different from the photos?

Every board is unique. Natural grain patterns and color variations mean no two boards will look exactly the same.

Can I use any oil on my board?

We recommend using products specifically made for wooden cutting boards. Avoid olive oil, vegetable oil, and regular (non-fractionated) coconut oil, which can become rancid over time.
